UPCOMING Event
An American Wake
DATE
October 27th, 2024
The term ‘An American Wake’ originated in rural Ireland in the 1800s at a time of poverty and famine, when emigration to America meant a one-way ticket and never seeing your family again. As part of the Kerry Homecoming Festival at Halloween we recreate the American Wake only this time as a more joyous occasion as we welcome back people of Kerry ancestry to discover their ancestral roots in the Kingdom.
Join us on Sunday October 27th from 2 pm as we celebrate our cultural heritage in an afternoon of traditional Irish music, song, dance and storytelling. In keeping with the time of year we will explore the Irish origins of Halloween with mythological tales of Samhain and a professional genealogist will assist our visitors in tracing their ancestral roots.
Kindly supported by Kerry County Council and Fáilte Ireland.
