Brendan Kennelly – The Poet as Thinker

A lecture by Dr. Declan Kiberd.

Declan Kiberd was a student of Brendan Kennelly at Trinity College Dublin. He took a PhD from Oxford University for his thesis Synge and the Irish Language (1979;1992). Other books include the trilogy Inventing Ireland (1995), Irish Classics (2000), After Ireland (2017).  He has been visiting professor at Cambridge University, the Sorbonne and Trento; and has been a lecturer in Irish at TCD, in English at TCD, as well as professor of Anglo-Irish Literature at UCD for over three decades and at Notre Dame thereafter.  He was elected a member of Royal Irish Academy in 2002 and to the American academy of Arts and Sciences 2019. He coedited An Crann faoi Bhláth with Gabriel Fitzmaurice.

In this lecture Declan will focus on the “lyrical” elements which conjoin the poetry of Kennelly with his critical writings and his work as a teacher.
